What is Inflammation and Why Is It So Bad for You?

At some point in your fitness journey, you’ve probably heard about anti-inflammatory medications or foods that fight inflammation. But have you ever wondered what inflammation actually is and how it impacts your body?

Here’s the truth: inflammation plays an important role in your body’s defenses, and it’s not all bad. But too much of a good thing can create unwanted effects, including pain and multiple conditions. Here’s what you need to know about inflammation and how it affects your overall health.

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is an immune system response that protects the body against viruses, bacteria, or other harmful contaminants. When invaders enter the body, your inflammatory response helps to seal off impacted areas so that these invaders can’t do their best work.

When inflammation occurs, white blood cells flood the impacted area. This can cause swelling, redness, and warmth, and may be even painful for some people.

Why Inflammation Gets a Bad Rap

Inflammation is actually a very good thing when it happens at the right time. But sometimes, your body will trigger the inflammatory response when there’s nothing to fight off. This is a problem because your body becomes tricked into thinking that healthy tissues are the target and will start attacking them and cause damage.

This can happen either on a short-term (called acute inflammation) or on an ongoing basis (called chronic inflammation). Chronic inflammation can lead to auto-immune diseases, in which your immune system attacks itself. It’s also a chief cause of many other diseases, including cancer, heart disease, asthma, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and various forms of arthritis.

Clearly, none of these things are ideal and can have serious health consequences. This is why reducing inflammation is critical to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
